I thought this was interesting so I wanted to share with our readers.
The infant, referred to as Saybie, was born in December 2018 via an emergency cesarean section at 23 weeks. She weighed just 8.6 ounces at birth.
Saybie spent five months in Sharp Mary Birch’s neonatal intensive care unit. She was discharged in May, weighing 5 pounds.
Saybie is the world’s smallest newborn to ever survive, according to the Tiniest Babies Registry maintained by the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The second-smallest surviving baby in the registry was born in Germany in 2015 and weighed 7 grams more than Saybie.
