You are in the process of placing a nontunneled central venous catheter (CVC) in an adult intensive care unit (ICU) patient. Based on the findings of a recent study, which of the following associations between CVC locations and adverse outcomes is mostlikely true?

The use of CVCs has been associated with infection, thrombosis and mechanical complications that contribute to increased morbidity and mortality rates as well as increased health care costs. To evaluate these risks, investigators conducted a randomized controlled trial in 10 ICUs in France from 2011 to 2014. The trial included patients aged 18 years and older requiring nontunneled central venous access. The anatomical sites used were the subclavian, jugular, and femoral veins. Patients were included if at least two access sites were available. If only one anatomical site was suitable, the catheterization was not included in the study. More than one catheter per patient could be included in the trial.
